 Adam Hollioake

Adam John Hollioake (born 5 September 1971 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) is a cricketing all-rounder.[citation needed]

Moving to England with his family in 1983, he attended St George's College, Weybridge and played first-class cricket for Surrey County Cricket Club between 1993 and 2004. He captained Surrey CCC from 1997 until 2003, and led them to victory in the County Championship in 1999, 2000 and 2002. He went on to claim 9 trophies in his time as Surrey captain making him the most successful 1st class captain of all time.

Hollioake's Test Test match career, lasted for four matches England at the end of 1997 and the beginning of 1998. He achieved great success in One Day Internationals, playing in 35 matches from 1996 to 2002, taking over the captaincy of the ODI side for 14 matches.

Adam Hollioake was a natural leader. His batting was based on strength rather than artistry but he was strong square of the wicket and played powerfully in the V and was quick onto anything short. As a seamer he was very effective in the one-day game, where his hard-to-pick knuckle ball fooled batsmen into playing too early. In 1996 he broke the Sunday League Wicket Record with a total of 39 wickets a record that stood til the end of the competition. His record of 352 A-List One day wickets at an average of 23 coupled with his ferocious batting make him one of Surreys all time great one day exponents.

He shone with the bat and ball in the one-day games against the 1997 Australians and was named man of the series in their 3-0 whitewash of them and later that year inherited the captaincy of England's one-day side from Mike Atherton. It was an unprecedented but initially successful move as Hollioake's inexperienced squad lifted the Akai Singer Champions Trophy in Sharjah. The first major one day series victory for an England one day side abroad in over a decade.

In 2002 suffered the heartbreak of seeing his talented younger brother and Surrey and England team-mate, Ben, die in a car accident.

At Ben's funeral, Adam stated that in a tribute to his brother and to Ben's girlfriend, Janaya Scholten, who was seriously injured in the crash, Adam and his wife (who was seven months' pregnant at the time of Ben's death) planned to name their daughter Bennaya, a combination of Ben and Janaya's names.[1] Adam and the Hollioake family established the CHASE Ben Hollioake fund in 2002 to raise funds for CHASE hospice care for children in memory of Ben. [2] In 2003 Adam undertook a journey called "Adam's Journey" that involved walking a marathon a day for 30 days, then sailing the English channel from Brighton to Dieppe, riding from Dieppe to Gibraltar and finally rowing from Gibraltar to Tangiers (in Africa) in all the journey took over 2 months and raised several hundred thousand pounds for the Chase Charity.

Adam Hollioake returned from an enforced break a more mature character and, sometimes batting like a man possessed, lifted Surrey to a poignant third Championship title in four years, and even resumed his captaincy of the side, being named as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2003, inevitably his priorities had been changed irrevocably by the tragedy and he retired at the end of a highly successful 2004 season.

He came out of retirement to play in a World XI against an Asian XI in a Twenty20 charity match in aid of the 2004 Asian tsunami, played at The Oval on 20 June 2005. He finished his international career with a hat trick and is the only player to finish their career with 3 wickets from the last 3 balls of their career.

In 2007 Adam Hollioake created the TV property Australia’s Greatest Athlete, a show designed to find the Greatest Athlete in Australia. The concept took the perceived best athlete from each code of sport and pitted each of the athlete’s against one another in attempt to reveal Australia’s Greatest Athlete. Adam Hollioake formed Quiet Storm Productions. Quiet Storm Productions were the official production company for the 2nd series of Australia’s Greatest Athlete which aired on channel 7. The first series of Australia’s Greatest Athlete was aired on channel 9 with the series shown on channel 7 in the proceeding 2 seasons.. Series one and two were won by Billy Slater representing NRL and series 3 by Quade Cooper. Rexona was the sponsorship partner and naming rights sponsor in all series to date.

In 2009 Adam started Cricket Challenge a venture to raise money for the charity Paradise Kids, where members of the public compete against stars and cricketing legends for a $5000.00 first prize. All proceeds went to Paradise kids and was a huge success.

Adam is also the creator of Battle of the Stars a charity golf day where members of the public where accompanied by a star of screen or sports, this was to raise money for ((The Queensland Flood Appeal)), Stars such as Golf's ((Adam Scott)), Rugby Union's ((Quade Cooper)), V8 Supercar Drivers ((Dick Johnson)) and his son ((Steve Johnson)) where among the multitude of celebrities that donated their valuable time to raise some much needed funds.
